The Community Freezer Program began approximately ten years ago and has continued to grow ever since. Each year, not-for-profit organizations in Rocky Harbour and surrounding communities apply for moose licenses. When successful, they donate the moose, either in whole or in part to the Community Freezer.
The recreation committee distributes moose once a month, with each household eligible to receive four bags. This typically supports 80–100 people monthly. The moose is provided free of charge to residents of Rocky Harbour, Norris Point, and Sally’s Cove, serving people of all ages, including seniors and newcomers to Canada.
The program’s goal is to secure 6–8 moose each year, which allows operations from November through February, and into March if supplies last. The program relies heavily on volunteers and community committees to harvest, transport, and donate the moose. Without their dedication, this initiative simply wouldn’t be possible!
